The Southern Alps of New Zealand is a sublime experience - skiing on a remote alpine island in the Pacific Ocean, an uncrowded naturally beautiful paradise that only rugged New Zealand can offer.

The Craigieburn Range and Mount Cook/Tasman Glacier regions of the South Island offer some of the largest vertical descents of backcountry powder skiing in New Zealand. Huge bowls, chutes and colouirs in a remote untouched setting.

The southerly weather pattern drives its way up New Zealand from Antarctica delivering cold, dry snow onto the Southern Alps and makes for a short, yet punchy season best sessioned in  mid - July, August, September & October. The Craigieburn Range offers some of the best steep skiing in the country with huge powder bowls, 40-50 degree colouirs accessible from the many ‘club’ fields across the range. We assess weather conditions and choose the best aspects on ski fields to maximise your time allowing you to score the best turns available. We organise backcountry ski & snowboard tours for 3, 4 & 5 days guiding to introduce you to the best areas and to get you off the beaten track.

The iconic Mount Cook and Tasman Glacier area is accessed by plane or helicopter where we stay in high mountain huts in the beautiful, remote alpine slopes with views across the whole South Island down to the West Coast & Tasman Sea – quite an unforgettable experience. Again we can offer backcountry ski & snowboard tours here for 3,4 or 5 days organising all logistics ensuring the sweetest turns in an alpine amphitheatre like no other.

Hakuba

Unlike many other Japanese resorts Hakuba offers access to huge, open backcountry terrain - the start of the extensive Japanese Alps. The highest mountainous region in Japan. So you can mix up the ridiculously good tree skiing with big, steep burly 1000m vertical lines! It's only a 4 hour train ride from Tokyo too! Purrrrfect.

There are great bars and restaurants in the laid back 'Echoland' area of Hakuba too where you can hang out with like-minded powder junkies, find cute girls (or guys) and still have a party any night if you want to let loose....it's a holiday after all right!

They have a great concept in Japan which is Izakaya - a drinking establishment (pub) which serves food to accompany your drinks. A bit like tapas. You can rock up to the bar drink great beer and have a variety of 'food to die for' served up right under your schnose after getting ya face smashed all day in the pow!

Sushi!

Sushi!

So we've got POWDER, we've got great PEOPLE, we've got killer FOOD and what would top it all off????...maybe some kind of natural hot springs to add to the equation and YES you have it - ONSEN! Japanese have become obsessive about bathing in the Onsen and I guess so have I.....

On the other side of your powder gorging, food hogging and boiling bones shenanigans you can grab some pretty cool local culture too. While you're here why not check out snow monkeys, famous castles and of course one of the most incredible mega-cities in the world - the big smoke of Tokyo. A great way to start or end your mission!

Japan is great for famlies too with all the big ski resort facilities on offer.....like ski school for the kids ;-)

Why does Hakuba get so much snow?

The storm cycle comes from coldest Mongolia and hits the Sea of Japan, as the precipitation rises it hits cold air and delivers some 12m average snowfall per season.
