A passion for powder and the good things in life!

Paul has been ski guiding across the globe for a number of years, more recently spending 5 seasons in big avalanche environment Gulmarg, Kashmir (India), Iran and Japan. Paul now specialises in running Ski & Snowboard tours in his home country of New Zealand & his favourite exotic location Japan.

Even as a child Paul was always climbing trees, playing Indiana Jones, making tree huts and canoeing down The River Avon which runs past his childhood home in Christchurch, New Zealand. That passion and ‘go for it’ attitude transferred onto the ski field at age 3 which spawned his first nickname of ‘killer’.

Since then - and many nicknames later - skiing, trekking and climbing many of the world’s most pristine and beautiful mountains has culminated in Sunstone Adventures.

Paul has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with 15 years experience as a Human Resources Consultant within Information Technology. He now uses his exceptional organisational and customer service skills to run Sunstone Adventures.

Sunstone is a powder guiding company designed for the person who wants the best powder available and a local experience.

“We understand your requirements, as let’s face it we’re all a bit different, we listen to what you want and tailor those needs to suit you or your group. We deliver on your expectations resulting in a fun, well-organised successful adventure.”

Paul’s passions are skiing chest deep powder, eating chillis, surfing waves on his Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Board, hanging out with his family (Steph & Xander), drinking latte and listening to all kinds of great music! Paul is an ambassador for local gear company Macpac http://www.macpac.co.nz/macpac-blog/meet-paul-swettenham.html and helps test new products for Gore-Tex.

When he’s not in Japan, Paul lives in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Testimonials

"A side from the awesome skiing, it was the organization of our stay as a whole - professional, yet casual and personal, with a dedication to make sure we got as much as possible out of our stay, including the best available skiing according to conditions as well as seeing the local sights & cuisine and getting to know people. In fact many times it felt like hanging out with old friends."
Dr. Mans Berglund (Medical Doctor), Sweden.

"Great service! It's a tough place to arrange things especially if you haven't been there before. Paul gave us the full run down of the place before we came and made it really simple and easy for us to get set up with accommodation, guided us around the mountain and organised airport shuttles etc, very easy and stress free. Cheers Paul"!
Mr. Tim Comyn (Engineer), New Zealand.

"Paul is timely, knowledgeable and professional. Paul's safety considerations are always apparent and at no stage did we feel exposed to any unnecessary or unexpected risk. It was an extremely cost effective service which was invaluable due to the possibility of avalanches, the language and cultural barriers and other "unique" peculiarities of the area. An absolute must for any skiers or boarders touring the area for the first time."

Mr. Liam Allan (Pilot), Australia

"Our guide Paul knew the place, the skiing, the snow conditions, the food and the people, and shared all of this with us in a way that made us feel we were skiing with a friend. The deal covered Hotel, transportation and guiding, so that only thing we had to decide was where to eat dinner each night. I was recommended Sunstone by a friend, and now it's my turn to recommend Sunstone! We are already looking to book for next time..."
